OK, try this. The form is basically as before:

    <h2>Test</h2>
    <form id="form">
        <input type="text" name="test" id="test" required/>
        <input type="submit" value="Test"/>
    </form>
</section>

Then bind the submit event to a function which calls the checkValidity() method:

function manualValidate(ev) {
    ev.target.checkValidity();
    return false;
}
