css - I cannot line up an icon with text on the same line

Question

I am using a checkmark in place of the normal list style for a UL. However, I am unable to line the icon up vertically with the list text.

I tried using margin and padding but with no effect.

I'd really appreciate it if someone could show me how I can move the icon so that it lines up.
