opc ua - Milo OPC UA Server how to update node values?

I just wanted to create my own OPC UA server for testing based on milo. I started with the example, but I do not get where and how I can update my node values - e.g. I get current values from "somewhere" (periodically or unsolicited) and wanna publish this value on nodes. I have seen in the example the following code for the dynamic nodes, but for me it is not clear what this filter chain is. How often is this called? ... maybe I just have a lack of OPC UA knowledge and should read the concepts, maybe this will explain what this filter chain is...
