internationalization - i18n of php and js - what is the best way?

i would like to translate my project to different languages. i have strings in PHP as well as in javascript that have to be translated.

what is the best way in these days ?

• using gettext in php (<?=_('hello world');?>) and using translation maps (json) for string in Javascript Files ?

• or is it better to use translation maps (json) for both, php and javascript ?

Also i dont understand the following probably upcoming problem:

For example 'Montag' in german language means 'Monday'. 'Montage' is on the one hand the plural of 'Montag' / 'Mondays' and on the other Hand it means 'Assembly'.

So in case i just use gettext on the word Montage (<?=_('Montage');?>) how get i can sure to have the right translation in the context ? How can i decide which of the 2 Options (Mondays / Assembly) do i need at the specific point on the website ?
