Add pending status to gatsby-plugin-mailchimp

Question

I'm using gatsby-plugin-mailchimp to add subscribers to my mailing list but there's no info in the docs on how to add a pending status to new subscribers. The idea is, before someone is added to the mailing list, they have to confirm their subscription.

Here's what I tried based on an earlier function that I used that worked, i.e: the status property and the pending status:

    // handleSubmit is triggered on form submit
    _handleSubmit = async e => {
        e.preventDefault()
        const result = await addToMailchimp(
            this.state.email, 
            { FNAME: this.state.name, status: 'pending' }
        )
    }

After adding this field, this made no effect on being able to subscribe a new email, i.e: nothing broke! But I'm still without the functionality I'm after.
